The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is once again putting science in the spotlight through itsongoing partnership with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Entering its fourth year, the Sloan Science on Screen Program continues to support creators exploring scientific and technological themes through three initiatives: the Sloan Science and Technology Writer Fellowship, the Sloan Science and Technology Project Pitch, and the Sloan Science on Film Showcase.
This year, TIFF has selected Dr. Roshan Sethi's THE SURGEON as the 2026 Sloan Science on Film Showcase Official Selection. Previous showcase selections include Nacho Vigalondo's DANIELA FOREVER (2024), and Ildikó Enyedi’s SILENT FRIEND (2025).
THE SURGEON stars Michelle Yeoh as a gifted doctor who finds herself back in the operating room under extraordinary circumstances.
The Sloan Science on Film Showcase screening of THE SURGEON will be accompanied by a special post-screening discussion with Sethi and a scientific expert, offering audiences an opportunity to explore the medical realities that inform the film's gripping premise.
The festival has also announced the four participants in the 2026 Sloan Science and Technology Project Pitch, a non-competitive event that provides filmmakers with development support and the opportunity to present their science- and technology-related projects to an audience of industry decision-makers. Participants receive a $15,000 CAD award to support development, mentorship from a professional pitch coach, industry feedback, festival access, and membership in the TIFF Talent alumni network.
This year's participants represent a diverse range of scientific subjects, from genetics and neuroscience to reproductive technologies and neurodegenerative disease.
