The Lost Coast Kathryn Bancroft

An unpopular high school freshman with a knack for getting into trouble, 14-year-old Jack feels cut off from everyone. Especially his father, the face of Central Valley Oil and Electric's new 'Green Campaign.' When it's announced that the science fair is being hosted by his father's company, Jack is less than enthusiastic- until he realizes that it's the perfect way to meet the new girl at school. In an attempt to impress her, Jack plans a project that would involve them biking from their small town in California's Central Valley to the Pacific Coast. She is impressed, but with Jack's luck, the group soon balloons from two to four—including one of the most popular kids at school. Things continue to go awry as what originally began as a simple science experiment soon leads to the discovery that the very company his father works for might be involved in an impending environmental disaster.
