Lucas Hnath is a screenwriter and playwright. He is a is a two-time winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Grant for his feature-length screenplays, The Painting, the Machine, and the Apple and Still Life. Currently, Lucas is developing a high concept science fiction thriller for a New York-based production company.
As a playwright his recent plays include Hillary and Clinton, A Sake Tasting with Seance to Follow, Odile’s Ordeal, Hard Lovin’ Ever After, Halloween, Mai, Tonguetied, Three Attempts at Corrective Eye Surgery, Border Crossing: A Play in Translation, and Moth Light. Other projects include a new translation/adaptation of Woyzeck written for Active Eye and premiered at the Culture Project. Also in collaboration with Active Eye, Lucas wrote the libretto for Senjo: an opera in four parts, premiered at the Ontological Theater. For the Obie-winning theatre company Target Margin, he wrote an adaptation of Wagner’s “Siegfried,” titled Siegfried’s Nerve.
Lucas’ work has also been seen in production, workshops, and readings at the Access Theater, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Cleveland Public Theater, Neo-Futurists, and Manhattan Theater Source. He has also enjoyed playwriting residencies with the Royal Court Theatre and the 24Seven Lab.
